Part 10: The Steel Cuffs
Part 11 / 16Agent Martinez took two decisive steps forward.
His tactical boots clicked sharply on the hardwood floor.
*Click.*
*Click.*
He reached behind his back, unclasping a pair of heavy, polished steel handcuffs from his duty belt.
The metallic jingle sounded like a death knell in the quiet room.
*Jingle.*
"Julian Vance, you are officially under arrest."
Martinez's voice was firm and official.
"For federal bank fraud."
"Wire fraud."
"Grand larceny."
"And corporate embezzlement exceeding twenty-eight million dollars."
"Wait! Just wait one minute!" Julian pleaded.
He stumbled backward, knocking into a glass display case housing Arthur’s very first commercial architectural drafting tools.
The glass rattled violently.
Julian looked past the federal agents.
His eyes locked onto me with desperate, pleading panic.
"Clara! Look at me!"
Tears began welling in his red-rimmed eyes.
"I am your brother!"
"We grew up under the same roof!"
"Dad wouldn't have wanted to see his only son led out of his own building in chains!"
He reached out toward me with open palms.
"Think of the family name, Clara! Please!"
I slowly pushed my chair back and stood up.
I stood tall.
I smoothed the front of my charcoal blazer.
Looking at the man who, less than twenty minutes earlier, had tossed three hundred dollars in my face and told me to take the subway.
"Dad begged you to visit him on his seventy-fifth birthday, Julian," I said.
My voice was steady.
Cold.
Clear as winter ice.
"You told his hospice nurse you were too busy entertaining private equity investors at a regatta."
I took a step forward.
"You didn't care about family when an old man was gasping for his final breath on a vinyl cot."
I locked my eyes onto his.
"Why should I care about family now that your crimes have caught up to you?"
Agent Martinez moved with practiced tactical precision.
He caught Julian’s right arm.
Twisted it cleanly behind his back.
And forced the arrogant CEO facedown against the cold leather of the boardroom chair.
*Click-clack!*
The sharp, heavy sound of the steel handcuffs locking around his wrists echoed through the cavernous penthouse.
Julian let out a muffled sob of humiliation against the leather.
