Part 7: The Interception
Part 8 / 16"Mr. Julian Vance?"
The lead investigator announced himself, stepping forward with deliberate, measured strides.
He held open a leather credential badge displaying the gold seal of the United States Department of Justice.
"I am Supervisory Special Agent Martinez, Federal Financial Fraud and Asset Recovery Directorate."
Julian froze mid-lunge.
His hands remained splayed awkwardly above the mahogany table.
Every single trace of color abandoned his face.
His skin took on the chalky, sickly gray of unbaked porcelain.
"F-Federal?" Julian stammered.
He pulled his hands back slowly, his fingers trembling.
"What is the meaning of this intrusion?"
He tried to summon his CEO authority, but his voice sounded thin, brittle, and pathetic.
"This is a strictly confidential family estate reading!"
"You have no legal warrant to enter private corporate headquarters!"
"We aren't here for the family estate reading, Mr. Vance," Agent Martinez stated.
His voice carried chilling neutrality.
"We are here executing a federal search, seizure, and asset preservation warrant."
Martinez held up a thick legal document stamped with judicial seals.
"Issued at six o'clock this morning by Chief Magistrate Judge Holloway of the Southern District of New York."
Victoria backed up against the heavy velvet draperies by the window.
Her manicured fingers clawed frantically at Julian’s suit sleeve in blind panic.
"Julian! Tell them to get out!" she shrieked.
"Call Congressman Miller!"
"Call the Mayor’s office!"
"You have contacts throughout the district! Do something!"
"No one in the municipal government can help you today, Mrs. Vance," Agent Martinez replied calmly.
He gestured to his partner.
The second agent placed a heavy black forensic data bridge on the credenza.
Without hesitation, he plugged it directly into the company’s central server terminal.
"For the past fourteen months, Mr. Vance has been systematically diverting client escrow balances," Martinez explained.
"Bond debentures."
"And employee pension reserves from Vance Logistics."
"Routing them directly into an off-book shell entity registered in Tortola, British Virgin Islands."
"That was a structured corporate investment vehicle!" Julian yelled.
His voice spiraled into uncontrolled hysteria.
"It was authorized by an emergency resolution of the executive board!"
"The board that you populated with two fictitious corporate entities and the forged credentials of deceased directors?"
Mr. Reichenbach interjected calmly from his seat at the table.
He looked over his glasses at Julian.
"Arthur discovered the missing twenty-eight million dollars four weeks before his passing."
