Part 5 / 16Julian straightened his posture defensively.
His chest puffed out beneath his Zegna suit.
An angry flush climbed rapidly from his starched collar into his cheeks.
"Rescinded? On whose authority?"
Julian slammed his hand onto the credenza.
"As designated executor of Arthur Vance’s estate and managing director of Vance Holdings, I dictate the operational calendar!"
He glared at the elderly lawyer.
"You don't burst into my boardroom unannounced, Marcus."
"You are not the executor of this estate, Julian," Mr. Reichenbach replied.
He did not raise his voice an octave.
The words simply landed.
The room dropped into absolute, suffocating silence.
Even the faint, distant hum of the ventilation shafts eighty stories above Manhattan seemed to die away.
Victoria took an aggressive step forward.
Her manicured fingers dug into the edge of the conference table.
Her voice escalated into a sharp, shrill screech.
"Excuse me? Are you losing your mind in your old age, Mr. Reichenbach?"
She shook her head in disbelief.
"Julian holds the certified Medical Power of Attorney and the Durable Estate Execution Decree!"
She leaned forward, spitting her words:
"We filed the signed, notarized documentation with the Kings County Probate Clerk back in May!"
Mr. Reichenbach walked calmly to the center of the conference table.
With slow, deliberate movements, he set down his heavy leather courier case.
He popped the heavy brass clasps.
*Snap.*
*Snap.*
The metallic snaps echoed across the boardroom like twin gunshots.
"The power of attorney you filed in May was procured through fraudulent medical certifications and gross judicial deception," Mr. Reichenbach said.
He pulled out a thick manila dossier bound with red tamper-evident forensic tape.
He looked up over the top of his wire-rimmed spectacles.
His gaze locked directly into Julian’s widening eyes.
"Arthur was fully aware that you attempted to have him declared legally incompetent while he was undergoing his third round of intensive chemotherapy."
Julian’s face flushed a violent crimson.
"That’s an outright fabrication!" Julian shouted. "Arthur was deteriorating rapidly!"
"The attending physicians confirmed his cognitive deficits!"
"He was hallucinating!"
Mr. Reichenbach flipped open the first page of the dossier.
"Dr. Harold Vance, your second cousin who received a two-hundred-thousand-dollar personal loan from your corporate shell account three weeks prior, was the only physician who signed those disability certificates."
Julian flinched.
"Unfortunately for your strategy, Julian, Arthur visited Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center forty-eight hours after your filing."
Mr. Reichenbach turned the page.
"He underwent a comprehensive, independently videotaped neuropsychological evaluation."
"The Chief of Neurological Sciences declared him in complete, lucid possession of his faculties."
Mr. Reichenbach tapped the medical evaluation with the tip of his fountain pen.
*Tap.*
"Arthur knew exactly what you were plotting."
"And he made meticulous preparations to ensure you would never touch a single dime."
