Part 8: The Audio Memo

Part 9 / 16

Agent Martinez gave a brief, crisp nod to his technical analyst.

The analyst tapped the illuminated surface of a ruggedized forensic tablet.

*Beep.*

A crackling, digitized audio recording began playing through the high-end conference room ceiling speakers.

The audio had the distinct background hum of a hospital room.

The rhythmic, monotonous beep of a pulse oximeter.

*Beep... beep... beep...*

The faint, steady hiss of medical oxygen tubing.

And then... a voice that made the entire room freeze.

It was Arthur Vance.

His voice was frail.

Raspy with terminal exhaustion.

Yet carrying the razor-sharp clarity and moral weight of a patriarch who refused to be deceived.

*"If you are listening to this recording..."* Arthur’s voice resonated through the room.

*"...it means Julian has already attempted to cast his sister aside with an insulting handout."*

Julian dropped onto the edge of the conference table.

His knees buckled completely beneath the weight of his own body.

He held his head in his shaking hands.

Trembling violently.

Arthur’s voice pressed forward through the speakers, unyielding:

*"Julian, you truly believed your dying father was too blind to decipher your ledger manipulations."*

*"You thought because I was confined to a hospice mattress, I wouldn't notice you forging my biometric digital certificates on the secondary mezzanine debentures."*

Victoria let out a muffled whimper, pressing both hands against her mouth.

*"Every single transaction receipt."*

*"Every offshore wire routing slip."*

*"And every authenticated affidavit proving your multi-million-dollar embezzlement was duplicated, forensically sealed, and secured inside Safe Deposit Box MCV-0914."*

A heavy cough sounded on the tape.

Then Arthur continued:

*"Clara has the master key."*

*"She also holds the sole legal power of attorney to restructure the entirety of Vance Holdings into an employee-governed trust."*

A long pause hung in the air.

*"You wanted to reign like an untouchable king, Julian."*

*"But a king who betrays his own flesh and blood to line his pockets ends his days as a disgraced beggar."*

*Click.*

The audio memo ended.

The resulting silence in the eightieth-floor boardroom was absolute.

Devastating.

Suffocating.

Victoria spun violently toward her husband.

Her manicured nails sank deep into the fabric of his sleeve, shaking him.

"You swore to me the mezzanine liabilities were protected!" she screamed.

"You swore on your mother's grave that the twenty-eight million was covered by offshore dividends!"

"Shut up, Victoria!" Julian screamed back.

He violently shoved her hands away.

His composure had disintegrated into total ruins.

"Shut your damn mouth!"
