Part 6: The Key on the Chain
Part 7 / 16Julian let out a sharp, mocking bark of laughter.
He shook his head as though he had just witnessed an amateur magic trick collapse before his eyes.
"The safe deposit box at Manhattan Central Vault?"
Julian spread his arms wide, looking at Victoria for validation.
"Are you serious, Reichenbach?"
"Good luck with that legal dead end!"
Julian stepped back to the table, leaning on his knuckles.
"Dad lost the physical brass keys to that box over five years ago during the warehouse fire!"
"We checked the vault logs yesterday morning—the account has been flagged as legally dormant since November 2019!"
Julian smirked, thinking he had won.
"Without the physical master key, not even the Supreme Court of New York can authorize an unsealed drill order without eighteen months of probate hearings!"
I slowly reached up to the neckline of my charcoal blazer.
My movements were calm.
Deliberate.
Unbuttoning the top button of my silk blouse, I reached beneath the fabric.
I drew out a thin, durable sterling-silver chain that had been resting warm against the hollow of my throat.
Dangling from the central link was an antique brass skeleton key.
Its surface was aged with a deep, rich patina.
Three microscopic laser-cut notches ran along the inner shank.
And near the rounded bow was a crisp serial number engraved into the metal:
*MCV-0914.*
Julian’s breath caught violently in his chest.
His mocking laughter died instantly in his throat.
It was replaced by a strange, choked rasp.
His eyes bugged out of their sockets as his gaze locked onto the brass key catching the morning light.
"Where..."
He swallowed hard.
"...where did you get that?" he whispered.
His voice cracked into an unrecognizable register.
"Dad placed it around my neck on his final evening at the hospice," I said.
My voice was steady.
Unbreakable.
"While you were hosting private equity brokers on a chartered yacht in the harbor."
I looked directly into his soul.
"Celebrating an inheritance you hadn't earned."
"Give that to me," Julian snarled.
All decorum vanished.
All boardroom elegance stripped away.
"Give that to me right now!"
He lunged across the wide mahogany table with outstretched, grasping fingers.
His forearm caught an empty crystal water glass.
*Crash!*
It shattered violently against the hardwood floor.
"That key belongs to the corporate estate!" Julian screamed, his face contorted in madness. "That is property of Vance Capital! Give it to me, Clara!"
Before Julian’s frantic fingertips could come within six inches of the silver chain...
The double oak doors swung inward once more.
With military precision.
Stepping through the threshold were two imposing men dressed in tailored charcoal federal suits.
Pinned to the left lapels of their jackets were the polished gold shields of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
And flanking them were two armed special agents from the New York Police Department’s Financial Crimes Directorate.
